The Tomintoul Glenlivet Distillery Ltd was formed in the early 1960s by the merger of two Glasgow whisky brokers – W&S Strong and Co., and Hay and MacLeod & Co. The group’s aim was to build a new Speyside distillery to satisfy a surge in demand for malt whisky.

A site was chosen just north of Tomintoul – the highest village in the Highlands – near the Ballantruan Spring, and Tomintoul distillery commenced production in 1965.

Not satisfied with operating the one distillery, Tomintoul Glenlivet Distillery Co. purchased Fettercairn from Mr Tom Scott Sutherland in 1971, who had himself expanded the site to four stills just a few years prior.

In 1973 Tomintoul Glenlivet was acquired by Scottish & Universal Investment Trust and was merged with blending firm Whyte & Mackay, which had also been purchased in the same year.

Tomintoul Glenlivet was incorporated as a limited company in 1985, and sold on to independent bottler Angus Dundee in 2000, although Fettercairn distillery, W&S Strong and Co., and Hay and MacLeod & Co. remained behind with Whyte & Mackay.

The company continues to operate the Tomintoul distillery to this day.
