BEN NEVIS DISTILLERY 2015 100 Proof Signatory Vintage 57.1% abv 700ml

£49.95

BEN NEVIS DISTILLERY 2015 The powerful Ben Nevis style meets the punch of first-fill oloroso in this 100 Proof Series bottling from Signatory Vintage. Aged for nine years and bottled at 57.1% ABV, it showcases that distinctive waxy, meaty Highland character alongside sherry-cask richness. The first Signatory 100-Proof Editions appeared at the tail end of 2023 and were immediately successful. The inaugural release included a 4-year-old Ben Nevis, a 13-year-old Ardmore and an outstanding dark chestnut-coloured Blair Athol 9-year-old that caused a sensation among whisky fans and became the must-have whisky over the Christmas season. Signatory’s 100-Proof Editions have gone from strength to strength ever since. At the time of writing in 2024, the Signatory Vintage 100-Proof Editions are approaching their first anniversary after becoming one of the biggest success stories of the year. There have already been over two dozen 100-Proof releases from Signatory, with the vast majority being bottled from first fill or refill sherry casks - another key factor in the range’s success. Distilleries included in the Signatory Vintage 100-Proof Editions so far include top quality but underrated gems like Caol Ila, Linkwood, Glenrothes and Mannochmore, and other highlights include a superb bourbon-casked Glen Ord. Some of the biggest hype in the series however, has surrounded the ‘mystery’ single malts from Orkney and Speyside (M) - the 100-Proof editions from these two Edrington distilleries both proved so popular that repeat batches had to be bottled. Signatory founder Andrew Symington was an early pioneer of the movement for natural colour and non-chillfiltration, a policy that has also served him well at Signatory’s distillery Edradour. Long known as an innovator and iconoclast in the whisky industry, the Signatory Vintage 100-Proof Editions prove Symington’s respect for the best traditions of single malt whisky, while the no-nonsense packaging, high strength and amazing value in the 100-Proof range demonstrate his instinct for giving the customers what they want.

BEN NEVIS DISTILLERY 2015

It was in 1825 that ‘Long’ John Macdonald took out a licence for his Ben Nevis distillery on the outskirts of Fort William and close to Britain’s highest mountain. His son Peter took up the reins soon after and built a significant business. By the end of the 19th century, when blended Scotch was becoming the fashion, Long John’s Dew of Ben Nevis was a successful single malt brand.

Such was the popularity of the MacDonald’s whisky that Peter built a second distillery, ‘Nevis’, which ran in tandem with the original unit. At one point, over 200 people were employed in this virtual whisky city.

This golden age was not to last. In 1908 Nevis closed and its sister plant operated intermittently until 1941 when the colourful Canadian entrepreneur (and former bootlegger) Joseph Hobbs bought the firm. The Long John brand name had already been sold to Seager Evans, and Hobbs sold off the former Nevis site to Associated Scottish Distilleries. Closed during WWII, Hobbs restarted production in 1955 when he installed a Coffey still. He then started to blend his malt and grain together before maturing.

The distillery fell silent in 1978, but production started again, along with much needed refurbishment, in 1981 when it was bought, appropriately enough, by Long John International – by then the whisky division of the brewer Whitbread. In 1989, Long John sold it to the Japanese distiller Nikka which had been buying malt and grain from the distillery for a number of years.

Ben Nevis has continued in production and has split its whisky between bulk supplies for Japan, the Dew of Ben Nevis and Macdonalds of Glencoe blends, and single malt bottlings, which start with a 10-year-old expression but in recent years have been extended to include Macdonald’s Traditional Ben Nevis which includes smokier components. Whisky from one of the last ‘Blended At Birth’ casks appeared as a 40-year-old in 2002.
